“I’ve Quit SmokING” – Verb Patterns

There are still a few posts to come on dealing with mistakes, but today something different – something for you to download.

One thing learners find a little tricky is knowing what patterns come after certain common verbs. For example, the verb hope can have the pattern hope + infinitive:

I hope to see her tomorrow.
I hope to finish my homework in the next hour.

Likewise, the verb want can have the same pattern:

I want to see her as soon as she arrives in town.
I want to do it, I really do.

In contrast, the verb suggest can be followed by a gerund:

I suggest taking in the castle and the wine region on your next trip there.
I suggest talking to lots of people if you want to improve your confidence in English.

What about the following examples?

The following exercise has 15 common verbs which are followed by the infinitive or gerund pattern. Decide which is the most appropriate verb form.

Level: It’s aimed for learners who are B2/Upper Intermediate or higher.

example: When did you quit …smoking…? [smoke]

1. I really recommend …………………………….. the new ‘Superman’ film, it’s great! [SEE]
2. I can just imagine …………………………….. on the beach in Thailand right now. I really need a holiday. [LIE]
3. After all the work I’ve been doing, I deserve …………………………….. a few days off and relax for a bit. [HAVE]
4. My job involves …………………………….. contracts with clients. [NEGOTIATE]
5. We were a little late as we stopped off on the way home …………………………….. a drink. [HAVE]
6. He categorically denies …………………………….. an intimate relationship with her. [HAVE]
7. There’s not much point in …………………………….. about things. [WORRY]
8. Guys, we can’t afford …………………………….. about – the project’s due tomorrow! [MESS]
9. I really regret …………………………….. out the other night. I overslept and arrived late for my maths exam. [GO]
10. I can’t help …………………………….. whenever I think of Bill holding the honey with those bees buzzing around him! [LAUGH]
11. I expect …………………………….. at about 5 today, if the boss’s ok with that. [LEAVE]
12. I’m determined …………………………….. this through. I won’t rest till it’s all done. [SEE]
13. I don’t mind …………………………….. if you want to try it on first. [WAIT]
14. I volunteered …………………………….. him up from the airport. [PICK]
15. I fancy …………………………….. that new play at the Swamp Inn. What do you reckon? [SEE]
